The handmade look is presented as a tonic in the age of AI, with the article careful to say the film was not conceived as an anti-AI project and that its limitations became appealing only after it went viral.

Un répit face aux productions IA
AI is the contrast that makes the film worth defending: a section of viewers appreciated the human effort as opposed to AI generation. Notes: The insult sense is also present a sentence earlier — social media labelled it worse than AI (P03:S02); categorised on the article's own framing of why it worked.

Three motives are given: curiosity after the ink-wash poster implied a far more polished film, the bull-market pun making it appealing to investors hoping for luck, and the cult tradition of enjoying films whose failures violate the conventions of normal filmmaking. Notes: Three mechanisms are offered in parallel; coded to the one this cluster develops at most length and that no other outside-side cluster explains linguistically.

Pour la chance en bourse
Two motives are quoted from Weibo: the AI-antidote framing, and rooting for the film in hope of a bull market, with one user saying he will go if the index reaches 4,000. Notes: Both motives are developed; coded to the one this cluster quotes at greatest length, with the AI framing recorded under Q011.

De la sympathie pour les créateurs
The discussion is said to have moved beyond mockery towards genuine curiosity about the makers' unusual five-year production process.

De la sympathie pour les créateurs
The essay names three motives and argues past two of them: buying tickets to ridicule the film with an audience, championing it as anti-AI art, and — the critic's own reading — celebrating the ability to have an original idea at all. Notes: The article explicitly rejects so-bad-it's-good as the explanation, which is why this is not coded curiosity_how_bad_is_it.

Une lassitude des autres films
Curiosity after the film trended is named, and a quoted commentator adds a rebellion against traditional aesthetics and an appetite for something raw, unpolished and free from AI.

Un soupçon rapporté, non prouvé
The column traces the producer from a 2016 decorating firm renamed into film in July 2021, the year the shooting permit was obtained, and infers the rename was driven by the filing requirement. Notes: The corporate-history questioning is coded here as a suspicion about the film's money and purpose; the subsidy word appears later in the piece and is not the anchor used.
2026-08-15
Une allégation de subvention locale
The article takes up online money-laundering and local arts-subsidy suspicions at length, cites a Liaoning scheme worth up to one million yuan, reports no filing record has been found, and quotes practitioners saying the film's scale fits neither pattern. Notes: Reported and largely rejected in the same piece; coded by the specific claim rather than by its disposal, with the rejection recorded here.
The producer's take is estimated at about six million yuan, set against a company with 100,000 yuan of registered capital, one insured employee and a decorating past.

The wider claim, quoted from a Chinese commentator, is that the film's rise reflects a rebellion against traditional aesthetics and an appetite for something raw and unpolished.
2026-08-17
Le public se détourne du léché
The wider claim is a contrast: the film is the antithesis of the slick, bedazzling animations such as Ne Zha 2 that have drawn huge crowds in China in recent years.
2026-08-17
Une victoire pour les amateurs
The wider claim is put in trade terms: the film turned laughter into the kind of theatrical phenomenon most independent filmmakers dream of.
2026-08-23
Une victoire pour les amateurs
The wider claim is that hand-made imperfection is becoming scarce and worth rallying around, which is what the audience response is said to show.
2026-08-29
Une victoire pour les amateurs
The wider claim is that this is the rare passion project drawing audiences not because it is so bad it is good but as an occasion to celebrate the ability to have an original idea at all.
2026-08-27
Un cas isolé, rien de plus
The wider claim places the film in the cult-movie lineage from Manos and Pink Flamingos to The Room, where audiences form temporary communities around a shared performance rather than a good film. Notes: Coded as no wider market claim because the argument is about a recurring audience tradition, not about the state of the film market.

The column reads the regulations: refusal grounds are all content red lines, the technical clause covers projection engineering rather than production finish, and a company head adds that quality is nominally reviewed by at least three experts — leaving how this film passed as an open question.
The column asks how a film like this passed smoothly into cinemas, and answers only that a cinema-manager preview is trade custom rather than legal requirement, so either it did not run or it was disregarded.

A veteran producer explains that technical review covers only projection safety — bad frames, sync, decoding — and never production quality, so a film clears the permit if content crosses no red line and paperwork is in order; the filing and permit numbers are then given.
The article reports that this film got its dragon seal while carefully made films wait, and that review checks only whether content complies, not whether the work is any good — which it says is being read as satire on the Chinese review system.
Other social media users have hailed the movie as the antidote to the AI slop that is taking over social media algorithms.D'autres utilisateurs des réseaux sociaux ont salué le film comme l'antidote aux productions IA de piètre qualité qui envahissent les algorithmes des réseaux sociaux.

Some fans reportedly viewed the film's handcrafted quality as a welcome tonic in the age of AI.
2026-08-17
Some viewers have embraced the film’s visibly handmade aesthetic as a welcome counterpoint to polished studio animation and the genAI slop flooding online platforms and even theaters in some smaller countries.

A section of viewers appreciated the human effort that went into making the film, as opposed to it being generated by AI.
2026-08-18
Niu Lai is taking on The Odyssey and Spider Man: Brand New Day, but it has nothing to do with AI.
2026-08-24
Li Qinyu, chief commentator at Chinese news outlet The Paper, likened it to a "form of bizarre performance art" and said the film's going viral could have been driven by a "rebellion against traditional aesthetics" and something different: raw, yet unpolished and free from AI.
2026-08-23
As AI monopolizes ugly things from talentless hacks with carbon copied nightmares, this is the kind of ugly that will become tragically rare.
2026-08-17
Some film fans have praised the shoddy animation as a welcome tonic in the age of artificial intelligence.
2026-08-17
It has gone viral on Chinese social media, with people praising it for its terrible quality, making it both humorous but also flying in the face of a growing push for generative AI use in filmmaking.
2026-08-18

2026-08-19
Rather than putting audiences off, its reputation for poor quality encouraged people to head to cinemas to see for themselves just how bad it really was.

CHINA — A low-budget Chinese animated film that was widely mocked for its crude visuals became a viral hit, with people packing cinemas to see just how bad it is.
2026-08-20
Viewers began sharing the film's stiff characters, unusual sound effects and bizarre sequences, turning its perceived shortcomings into memes and encouraging others to buy tickets simply to see what the fuss was about.
2026-08-17
Much of the early attention mocked the film’s stiff animation, unconventional voice acting, and difficult-to-follow story.
2026-08-18
Initially a flop, the movie has seen a surge in sales after early viewers uploaded videos to social media mocking its crude low-poly animation and apparently nonsensical plot.
2026-08-18
Some social media users said they had bought tickets to judge the film for themselves, while cinemas increased screenings as discussion spread across Weibo and other platforms .
2026-08-17
Niu Lai’s success appears to stem less from its merits and more from its “so bad it’s good” energy.
2026-08-20
The film is reportedly so bad that viewers were intrigued by it, and this has boosted its box-office collection.
2026-08-18
Then, clips and screenshots of its deliberately rough-looking animation began circulating online, with audiences buying tickets partly to see whether it could really be as bad as everyone claimed.
2026-08-21
What initially appeared to be a major weakness became the very thing that drew curiosity.

Its fortunes changed after clips from the film began circulating on Chinese social media, where viewers drew attention to its extremely basic animation and shoddy visual style.
2026-08-21

2026-08-18
The 86-minute animation follows a calf named Niu Lai on a surreal journey, but its rudimentary 3D models, jerky movement, awkward dialogue, and occasionally bizarre sound effects have made it an online punchline, with one Chinese review likening it to a “3D beginner’s work”.
